We think sustainably

Sustainability is not a goal we have to achieve, but a path we are committed to take. We think sustainably and take decisions regarding our production responsibly and with awareness. Due to our proximity to nature, sustainability is deeply rooted in our minds and leads us like a compass. Sustainable practice is the sum of many small decisions. A way that we have been following step by step. Explore #theschneiderway here.

How our way began

At a very early stage, we began to focus on resource-saving and environmentally friendly processes. Discover some examples and milestones that mark our sustainable way into the future.

Sustainability on a product level

The longevity of our writing instruments which is guaranteed among other things by high-quality workmanship and long writing performance, is the most important contribution to avoiding waste. In addition, we focus on the following building blocks:

Pens made from recycled material

The use of recycled plastics protects the environment and saves resources.

Refillable pens

By providing easy refill options, we avoid waste and extend the lifetime of our products.

Pens made from bio-based plastic

Bio-based pens are made form renewable raw materials and conserve finite natural oil reserves.

Pens with financial climate contribution

We calculate the carbon footprint for many of our pens and offset the unavoidable emissions by providing financial support for climate protection projects.

Labels and certificates

Trust and transparency are important to us
That is why we seek to certify our products and materials and show their sustainable properties by using logos. Find out more about the logos and what they stand for.

The Blue Angel

The eco-label of the Federal Government serves as a orientation for sustainable purchasing. It guarantees that the products meet high standards of environmental, health and performance characteristics.

Bio-based material

Writing instruments with this logo are made of bio-based plastic. These are made from renewable raw materials (e.g. corn or sugar cane) and conserve finite resources.

Recycled plastic

Writing instruments featuring this logo are made from recycled plastic. The use of recycled materials avoids waste, reduces emissions and conserves finite resources.

Financial climate contribution

Writing instruments with this logo support a certified climate protection project. Unavoidable emissions that occur during production are offset by supporting certified climate protection projects.

EMAS

The EU scheme is one of the most stringent environmental management systems in the world. It obliges companies to continuously improve their environmental performance (energy consumption, waste, emissions).

German Sustainability Award (GSA)

The GSA is the largest, most renowned and most coveted award forf sustainability and environmental competitions in Europe and has been awarded since 2008 for ecological and social commitment.

Schneider and the SDGs

In 2015, the United Nations Member States defined 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). They represent the most important factors for achieving a global community that is sustainable from an economic, social and ecological point of view by 2030. In order to achieve the ambitious goals, everyone is requested to participate. We would also like to make a contribution and have selected eight goals on which we have the greatest influence.

FAQ

Examples of bio-based plastics are BioPE, BioPET, cellulose acetate and PLA. Bio-based plastics are derived from renewable raw materials (RRM). These include corn starch, sugar cane or beet, vegetable oils such as castor oil and cellulose from cotton or wood.
Plastic is a highly versatile material that lends itself well to creating user-specific solutions. Important aspects of writing instruments are high impermeability and good stability to ensure a long product service life, as well as outer surfaces that are pleasant to the touch. Moreover, plastic is a light, cheap material that can be used to make pens that anyone can afford. The simple and clean refilling methods that we offer for many of our products ensure their unlimited usability for years to come.

We already offer many product series with a financial climate contribution at no extra cost to our customers (including our Slider series and our One series). In addition, our entire promotional writing instruments programme makes a financial contribution to climate protection (all unavoidable emissions offset). Schneider currently supports a certified climate protection project for wind energy, Tuppadahalli in India and Ombepo in Namibia  as well as a marine conservation project .
Both are perfectly reasonable. The two ways of conserving resources must not be put in competition, because each of them is legitimate. The choice of the material depends strongly on the requirements of the resulting product. Products made of bio-based plastic and thus renewable resources can also be recycled in the end. Furthermore, infinite recycling is not possible because the quality of the plastic decreases after each recycling.
Bio-based inks are mainly made from water and renewable raw materials. In contrast to the petroleum-based raw materials traditionally used, bio-based raw materials obtained from renewable plants bind the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide. As a result, bio-based inks make a positive contribution to climate protection. Our commitment to sustainability is also reflected in the development of our inks. For example, the ingredients of the inks we have developed in our sustainable highlighter Job consist of over 60% plant-based raw materials (based on the total carbon content). We base this claim on evidence from a test laboratory recognized by DIN CERTCO.
