The Baden-Württemberg Chamber of Architects has honoured Schneider Schreibgeräte GmbH as part of its Exemplary Construction programme. The award was given for the expansion and conversion of the former production hall into the modern ‘blulog’ logistics centre in Schramberg Tennenbronn, a project that combines architectural innovation, sustainability and clear brand identity in an outstanding way.
A building that reflects Schneider's identity
What is now a striking blue cube visible from far above the valley began as a vacant property with the character of an industrial wasteland. Thanks to the conceptually well-preserved reinforced concrete structure, the building was intelligently redeveloped – an approach that is entirely in line with Schneider's understanding of resource awareness and sustainable progress.
A high-performance logistics centre was created on approximately 5,800 m² of flexible space, which not only perfectly supports storage and order picking processes, but can also be converted into production space at any time if required. A modern vertical conveyor system connects all levels and enables highly automated goods logistics. This versatility is an architectural commitment to the company's long-term innovative strength.
The 2,200 m² printed textile facade, designed in the company colours and printed with the logo, is particularly striking. It transforms the once restless facade structure into a calm, iconic cube that immediately catches the eye. During the day, the facade appears as a homogeneous body, while at dusk the illuminated window bands create a fascinating interplay between inside and outside. Functional aspects such as daylight utilisation and reduced sun protection requirements are combined with a strong corporate design approach.
Internally, the logistics centre at Schneider is called “blulog” – a combination of “blu” for the characteristic company colour and ‘log’ for the function of the building.
Recognition for building culture and responsibility
The ‘Exemplary Building’ award in the district of Rottweil annually honours architecture that is not only functional but also socially relevant. The jury emphasised criteria such as design quality, structural honesty, integration into the context and sustainable use of resources – all characteristics that the blulog project exemplifies.
It shows that innovative industrial architecture and regional roots are not mutually exclusive but rather reinforce each other. The city of Schramberg particularly highlights the project as an example of high-quality commercial buildings that contribute to a positive cityscape.
